Abstract In this paper,investigation has been made on the process for the synthesis of salicylaldehyde by esterification-oxidation with phenol,paraformaldehyde(PF),boric acid as initial materials.Improvement was made on the esterification step,and depolymerization of PF in gas state was adopted as input manner in hydroxymethylation step.Meanwhile,reaction temperature in hydroxymethylation step,water content in PF,the amount of catalyst were discussed and the optimal operating conditions were attained under the optimal conditions.The yield of salicylaldehyde was 60.5% with purity of 98%.
