Abstract The limitation of the traditional kinetic models was introduced for the description of the extraction of natural product. After pretreating the data of the orthogonal experiments of CO_2 high pressure extraction of the solanesol in the tobacco,EBP model of the artificial neural network was established by determining the number of nodes in the hide-layer,the training epoch and the test of the network. In accord with the results of the orthogonal experiments, the artificial neural network, which was used to simulate the extraction process, provided the theoretical basis for the process design and optimum of the CO_2 high pressure extraction of solanesol in the tobacco. It is shown that the artificial neural network has a great advantage in the simulation of the process of supercritical or CO_2 high pressure fluid extraction.
