Abstract In leather industry, chromium-organic is the main species of chromium in the effluent of main tanning section and retanning dyeing section. Chromium complexes of low molecular organic acids and collagen hydrolysis products dominate the chromium speciation in the main tanning wastewater. In addition to the highly stable multi-organic acids, conventional montmorillants and collagen hydrolysis products do not affect the removal of chromium by alkaline precipitation. The chromium in the waste water of dyeing and finishing section forms organic complexes with various leather chemicals and exists in various forms in this section, such as water-soluble, hydrophobic sol and particulates. Among them, water-soluble chromium-organic complex mainly exists in anionic form and is difficult to be removed effectively by alkaline precipitation. Our serial study indicates that the removal of water-soluble anionic chromium complex in leather dyeing and finishing wastewater is the key of chromium reduce in leather industry wastewater.
