Abstract 

Halloysite nanotubes are a very promising new type nanotubes material. The present study was to investigate changes in surface structure and desulfurization properties of heat-treated and acid-leached halloysite nanotubes. Halloysite nanotubes were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and SEM. The experimental results show that halloysite nanotubes have high thermal stability and the rough tubular morphology remains largely intact as long as the calcination temperature was <700 ℃. However, hydroxyl groups content of halloysite nanotubes decrease with the increase of calcination temperature. The change of hydroxyl groups content have an impact on desulfurization properties of halloysite nanotubes. Acid treatment can restore the removal hydroxyl of calcinated halloysite nanotubes in a certain degree. Desulphurization performance of the acid treated samples increase with the increase of hydroxyl content. Hydroxyl content is an important factors affecting desulfurization effect of halloysite nanotubes.
