Abstract Zirconium titanium pyrophosphate (ZTPP), one type of tetravalent bimetallic acid salt, has been synthesized by a sol-gel method. Various characterization methods including FT-IR, SEM, BET and TG-DTA were utilized for the evaluation of the material. The results indicate that ZTPP is an amorphous and porous material with high thermal stability and high surface area. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that adsorption capacity increased with the increasing of initial cesium ion concentration which can reach up to 1.4 mmol/g; adsorption capacity of cesium ion on ZTPP can be effective at a wider pH values from 1 to 13, and coexisting competitive cations have a minimal effect on its extracting ability. The removal rate of cesium ion can reach approximately 100% by adding more material.
