Abstract The copolymer (sulfonated polyacrylamide) of acrylamide (AM) and 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) were synthesized by using a complex initiation system which contains the redox initiator (ammonium persulfate and formaldehyde sulfoxylate sodium sulfite) and watersoluble azo initiator (azobisisobutylamidine hydrochloride). The effect of redox ratio, complex initiation ratio, reaction temperature, pH of the system, monomer concentration on the apparent viscosity of polymer solution were studied and the temperature tolerance and salt resistance were evaluated. The results showed that the SPAM had better temperature tolerance and salt resistance performance than industrial partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM 3.5×107).
