Abstract The process for recovery of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole(M) from ceftriaxone mother liquor was studied by experiment. Evaporation crystallizationalkaline treatment combined process was proposed. Weight loss method was used to determine the solubility of M in different solvent systems and the purity of M recovered from evaporation crystallization process and alkali treatment process was determined by HPLC. The solubility of M in acetone was 15 g/100 g(room temperature), in ethanol was 2.5 g/100 g(room temperature),but with the presence of water the solubility of M was significantly reduced, which is only 1.3 g/100 g in ethanolwater(mass ratio of 0.4∶0.6) at 75 ℃. When mother liquor was evaporated to 85%, the yield of M was 98.6% and the purity of M recovered from evaporation crystallization process and alkali treatment process were 98.2% and 98.7%,respectively. With advantages such as no requiring of water added which reduced the energy consumption of the solvent recovery system, less alkaline consumption, no secondary pollution and no pluging the pipe, the new process had already been successfully used in industrial production.
