Abstract Rotary energy recovery device (RERD), a significant equipment for Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO), plays an important role in reducing the operating cost of the system. By using the computational fluid dynamics software of FLUENT, a threedimensional and unsteady Moving Mesh model of the RERD was firstly established. Effects of rotating speed and inlet flow rate on RERD’s stream salinity contours, volumetric mixing and efficiency were studied and analyzed, the optimum operational conditions to control the mixing below 4% and efficiency above 98% were gained at the same time. This simulation results can provide theoretical guidance for the practical development of RERD.
