Abstract There are many arguments on the methanol-to-olefin reaction as different catalysts and experimental conditions were employed by different researchers. The Carbene mechanism, radical mechanism, carbocationic mechanism and hydrocarbon-pool mechanism are the main popular mechanisms for MTO process in literatures. In this paper, the recent progress in the influence factors and different mechanisms for MTO process were reviewed and analyzed. It is pointed out that the hydrocarbon-pool mechanism is the most acceptable mechanism for MTO process.By applying this mechanism to explain the experimental phenomena,it is further concluded that it is more applicable than other mechanisms.
