Abstract Akzo Zout Chemie B.V.hopes to cut its energy bills in half with a new nonelectrolytic process that produces both VCM and soda. The process takes the technical form of a multicycle system. The essential new aspect is the catalyst oil loop,in which a fluid circulates, which consists of about 35 percent adiponitrile, and for the rest complex ions of I 2Cl - etc. This fluid absorbs ethylene under pressure.By the reaction of ethylene and I 2Cl -,iodochloroethane and I 2 are formed.Iodochloroethane converts to dichloroethane.Dichloroethane can be converted to VCM. In the next steps, this is fed to a NaHCO 3 crystalliser together with pure salt in solid form. The NaHCO 3 can be calcined to soda sah.
