Abstract The mechanism of starch/ acrylonitrile graft copolymerization initiated by potassium permanganate was studied. The relationships between grafting rate and initiator concentration, monomer concentration, starch concentration and reaction temperature were studied. Based on the experiment result the equation for the graft copolymerization was derived and the apparent activation energy was calculated.ESR analysis, together with other experiments, showed that the valence of manganic ion changed from Mn(Ⅶ),through Mn(Ⅵ)and Mn(Ⅲ),to Mn(Ⅱ).Meanwhile, hydroxide group on starch was oxidized to aldehyde or furtherly to hydrocarbon. These results are helpful to establish a supposed mechanism for the graft copolymerization. |
