Abstract Through activity evaluation, the effects on catalytic properties of low pressure methanol Catalyst CuO/ZriO/Al_2O_3/V_2O_5 of calcination, reduction and passivation have been investigated. By means of orthogonal design of experiments, the sequence of the factors which influece notably on activities has been obtained. A good program has been carried out. The results confirm that low h-ydrogen concentration, high space velocity and low heating rate are favourable for obtaining high activity and selectivity. The catalytic activities of the catalyst reduced at different constant temperatures are in the following order: 220>180>140. Calci-nation at 350 has given low selectivity for methanol, with total carbon conversion unchanged. The passivation experiments have shown that the reduced catalyst is extremely sensitive to oxygen. Only very low O_2-content, 0.01% in nitrogen, can be used for passivation in order to completely restore its activity XRD, TA, TPR and IR informations have been utilized to fur-nish the basis of theoretical explanation fos the experimental re-sults.
