Abstract
The natural polymer chitosan and ferric chloride were mixed to coagulate seawater from coastal Bohai Bay and the efficiency of chitosan coagulation aid was investigated. Impacts of chitosan dosage, pH and sedimentation time on pollutant and turbidity removal efficiency were studied. The results showed that chitosan could enhance the effect of flocculation significantly. Compared with the single use of ferric chloride, the mixed method can increase the turbidity, COD_ Mn and TP removal rates by 8.3%, 9.6% and 9.4%, respectively. Ferric chloride together with the use of chitosan could also improve the floc sedimentation performance significantly and shorten the sedimentation time. Considering across-the-board the major technical indicators for coagulation in seawater treatment process, the dosage of 1 mg/L CTS and 15 mg/L FeCl_3(m(FeCl_3)/m(CTS)=15.0) was optimum.
