Abstract:
The availability and utility of large-scale metabolic networks for analyzing the internal complicated mechanism of organisms have been explored for years. Algorithms that analyze large-scale metabolic network have been published a lot. Among all the available algorithms, flux balance analysis (FBA) is proved to be an effective approach to give quantitative prediction of genome-scale biological networks and used in most of the analysis. In this review, we summarized the recent advances of FBA, including typical FBA and extended FBA. Then stand-alone software and on-line tools that apply FBA to mathematically modeling large microbial networks are introduced. The advantages as well as weaknesses are further compared for better use of these tools. The problems and perspectives of the algorithm and software used in the metabolic network analysis are also discussed for further development.
