Abstract
Sustained oscillations in heterogeneous catalytic reactions were first observed in the exotbermic decomposition of N_2O on a CuO catalyst in 1968. Since then, the oscillations in solid-catalyzed reactions arose more interest to scientific reserchers recently. It is a new subject interesting in the study of chemical reaction engineering today. This paper is a review of literatures in the development of late years. The review surveys about 45 articles until 1983, it includes: the theoretical and practical importance of the study of oscillations in heterogeneous catalytic reactions; it's recent status, the main experimental results and their theoretical explanation; the mathematical models describing the oscillations of heterogeneous catalytic reactions; forced oscillationsthe periodic operation of chemical reactors; and the recent researching trends in this field.
